Location: Kupreanof Island, Alaska
Client: AFCEC

Bhate was responsible for removal and off-site disposal of 1,400 tons of contaminated soil and 4,000 tons of debris from this remote island in Southeast Alaska. Due to the remote location, all equipment was barged to the island using a shallow-draft beach landing craft and off-loaded directly onto the beach. Each day, the crew traveled to and from the island via boat. During excavation, contaminated soil was placed in one cubic yard super sacks. A total of 1,770 super sacks of contaminated soil and 22 tons of debris were transported off-site via barge to Seattle and then by rail to Waste Management’s Columbia Ridge Landfill in Arlington, Oregon.
