The Gunter Annex surface drainage system is designated as site SD-001 under the Installation Restoration Program (IRP) and is located immediately adjacent to Gunter Annex. The property is currently owned by the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC). Drainage associated with Gunter SD-001 initiates from within the boundaries of Gunter Annex and flows from three pipes located just east of the site into an ecologically sensitive, area known as Three Mile Branch Creek. It is believed that pesticide runoff in surface water from Gunter Annex contributed to the drainage ditch impacts. Chlordane was detected in sediment samples, from within the ditch, at concentrations up to 13 times the ecological screening levels. Bhate developed an innovative in-situ remedial approach using sodium persulfate to oxidize the contaminants. Our approach resulted in a cost avoidance of $1.2M for the Air Force – without impact to the installation mission or the ecologically sensitive areas adjacent to SD-001.
