Bhate
performed a Remedial Investigation (RI) at two former landfills
at Forbes Field, Topeka, Kansas for USACE/Kansas City under
the Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) program. The objectives
of the RI were to characterize the extent and magnitude of
contamination in groundwater, surface water, soil, sediments,
and other matrixes, which may pose a threat to human health
and/or the environment. As part of the RI, Bhate reviewed
the results of the previous investigations and developed a
work plan to accomplish the project objectives. Fieldwork
consisted of shallow, intermediate, and deep monitoring well
installation and groundwater sampling, Geoprobe soil sampling,
geophysical logging, discrete interval packer testing, surface
water and sediment sampling, surveying, and data validation/ERPIMS.
A Baseline Risk Assessment (BLRA) was performed
to identify Contaminants of Concern (COCs) and the need for
additional sampling. Based on these results, a second phase
of investigations was completed including additional monitoring
well installation and groundwater sampling. These data are
being reviewed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment
(KDHE).
